Nova Pioneer Debaters Bring Home Five Medals from National Championships

Three gold medals, two silver medals and five young voices making their mark on the national stage. Nova Pioneer’s young debaters have plenty to celebrate following an unforgettable experience at the National Debating League (NDL) Nationals in Gqeberha.

For five Nova Pioneer Ormonde students, a trip to Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) was about much more than competing in a national debating tournament. It was an opportunity to challenge themselves, build confidence, forge friendships and discover just how powerful their voices can be.

And while they returned home with an impressive collection of medals, some of their greatest achievements happened beyond the debating floor.

Five Debaters, Five Outstanding Performances

Competing alongside more than 250 speakers at the NDL Nationals, Nova Pioneer’s five representatives – Kutlwano, Dhema, Nuha, Langelihle and Joel – made their presence felt.

In an impressive achievement, every debate the team participated in saw a Nova Pioneer student recognised as the best speaker, regardless of whether their team won or lost the round.

Their individual performances earned all five students a place among the top 35% of speakers at the tournament.

The team returned home with five individual medals:

Gold: Nuha, Langelihle and Joel

Silver: Kutlwano and Dhema

Nova Pioneer’s Top Speaker: Joel

These achievements are a testament to the students’ preparation, critical thinking and ability to articulate their ideas with confidence.

But debating isn’t simply about speaking well. It’s about listening, questioning assumptions, considering different perspectives and building arguments that stand up to scrutiny. These are skills that extend far beyond a debate competition.

More Than Teammates – Growing Together

While the medals were certainly a highlight, the experience offered something equally valuable: personal growth.

Throughout the tournament, the students demonstrated a remarkable level of independence and responsibility. From waking up on time and ensuring they were ready for each day’s activities to looking out for one another, they showed maturity well beyond their years.

Their educator shared how the group grew closer throughout the experience, developing not only as debaters but also as a team that genuinely supported and cared for one another.

Their conduct didn’t go unnoticed either.

Parents, adjudicators and representatives from other schools approached the Nova Pioneer team to compliment the students on their debating abilities and the way they carried themselves throughout the competition.

For their educator and the parents who accompanied them, watching the students grow in confidence, independence and camaraderie was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Learning to Win, Learning to Grow

Of course, competitive debating comes with its share of challenges.

Despite their outstanding individual performances, the team did not secure enough debate victories to achieve an overall team ranking or bring home a team trophy.

Naturally, there was some disappointment.

But if there’s one thing these young debaters demonstrated, it’s that setbacks don’t have to define the journey.

Rather than allowing the result to discourage them, the students are already looking ahead to their next opportunity to compete.

With another debating tournament scheduled for later in the year, both students and parents have expressed enthusiasm about participating again.

It’s this determination to keep learning, improving and trying again that makes their journey particularly inspiring.

The Power of Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Nova Pioneer, we believe that developing future leaders and innovators means creating opportunities for students to discover their strengths and pursue their passions beyond academics.

Debating offers a particularly powerful platform for this growth.

When students learn to construct arguments, defend their ideas and engage respectfully with opposing perspectives, they’re developing skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

They’re learning to think independently, communicate with confidence and approach challenges from different angles.

Just as importantly, experiences like the NDL Nationals give students the opportunity to practise responsibility, build resilience and develop meaningful relationships with their peers.

These are the moments where learning comes to life.

It Takes a Community

Behind every student achievement is a community of people who believe in their potential.

The NDL Nationals experience was made possible through the dedication of the team’s educator and the support of parents who helped make the trip and participation possible.

It also highlighted just how valuable partnerships between schools and families can be in creating meaningful opportunities for young people.

The enthusiasm has extended beyond the tournament itself, with parents already expressing interest in seeing debating opportunities continue into secondary school.

It’s a reminder that when educators, students and families work together, extracurricular activities can become powerful platforms for learning, growth and achievement.

The Next Chapter Is Just Beginning

For Kutlwano, Dhema, Nuha, Langelihle and Joel, the NDL Nationals may have come to an end, but their debating journey is far from over.

They’ve returned home with medals, new experiences, stronger friendships and an even greater determination to keep improving.

Most importantly, they’ve discovered the power of their own voices.

Congratulations to our five young debaters! We’re incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved, the way you’ve represented Nova Pioneer and the example you’ve set for other students.

We can’t wait to see where your voices take you next.
