Leadership is not just about holding a position; it is about learning to serve others, working collaboratively and creating meaningful change. Our student leaders from Nova Pioneer Ormonde recently had the opportunity to explore these ideas through a series of engagements with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Student Affairs.
Invited to participate in UJ’s ongoing leadership development programme, our students gained valuable exposure to university leadership and the responsibilities that come with leading others.
During their first visit, students engaged in conversations with the UJ SRC President and Student Affairs leaders. The discussions explored the opportunities that leadership presents, how student leaders can work effectively with management, and the planning and organisation required to deliver successful events. These conversations gave our students valuable insights into the realities of leadership beyond the school environment.
The second visit saw our students attend the graduation ceremony for participants from the previous year’s programme. The occasion celebrated the growth and achievements of fellow student leaders, demonstrating the value of committing to leadership development and learning from experience.
On Friday, 16 October 2026, our student leaders attended UJ’s annual International Festival, an event planned and organised by the university’s student leaders. This provided a practical opportunity to observe how teamwork, coordination, planning and collaboration come together to create a successful event. Seeing leadership in action allowed our students to connect the lessons from their earlier engagements with a real-world experience.
These experiences embody Nova Pioneer’s culture principles of Servant Leadership and Always Growing. Servant leadership reminds us that leadership is about putting others first, working together and contributing to the greater good. Always Growing encourages our students to remain curious, embrace new experiences and continuously develop their skills. By engaging with university leaders and learning from their experiences, our students are taking important steps towards becoming thoughtful, confident and responsible leaders.
At Nova Pioneer, we believe that leadership development extends beyond the classroom. Opportunities such as these empower our students to learn from others, broaden their perspectives and bring new ideas into their own leadership roles. As they continue their leadership journeys, we look forward to seeing them put these lessons into practice and make a positive difference in their school and wider communities.
