Novaneer to Represent SA in Two International Chess Championships!

At just 9 years old, Atlehang Malemane is heading to the world stage – and she is only getting started.

A Grade 4 learner at Nova Pioneer Northriding, Atlehang has been selected to represent South Africa at two prestigious international chess championships: the Commonwealth Chess Championships in Sri Lanka and the World Cadets Chess Championships in Batumi, Georgia.

Her journey began at age 3, when she first discovered a love for the game. From there, she competed locally, then provincially, then nationally – earning a consistent Top 5 position at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship (SAJCC). In 2025, she achieved a Top 3 finish and was awarded her National Colours, one of the most significant honours in junior sport.

Her performance at SAJCC 2026 secured her international selection – a remarkable achievement for any player, let alone one still in primary school.

At Nova Pioneer, we believe that great learners are built when curiosity is taken seriously and ambition is given room to grow. Atlehang’s story is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when a child is encouraged to pursue excellence – on their own terms, at their own pace and all the way to the top.

We could not be prouder. Go, Atlehang!
