Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent because it shapes who your child becomes, not only what they achieve academically. In a world defined by rapid change, automation and new career paths, children need more than strong marks – they need character, confidence and real-world capabilities that are built through everyday experiences both inside the classroom and beyond it.

For over a decade, Nova Pioneer has been designed to develop the whole child through a clear educational philosophy and an intentionally structured school experience. Our inquiry-based learning approach builds curiosity and critical thinking in the classroom, while our special programming, clubs and sport extend that growth into leadership, wellbeing, teamwork and resilience. Because we believe learning happens everywhere, we prepare students not only for exams, but for life.

From Classroom to Career: How Hallmark Programming Develops Character and Capabilities

At Nova Pioneer, holistic development is intentionally driven through our Hallmark Programmes – special programming designed to go beyond the standard curriculum and develop well-rounded future leaders. Through our Innovation and Leadership Programme and Leadership Development Programme, students learn to think creatively, solve real problems, take on leadership roles and grow resilience and adaptability. You’ll also see this come to life through hallmark experiences like Nova Talks and Shark Tank. Our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Programme strengthens self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills and empathy, helping learners build the emotional intelligence needed to thrive. In the upper grades, our Post-School Success (PSS) programme supports students to explore options after school and provides personalised guidance on post-secondary pathways and planning.

Belonging, Teamwork and Talent: Life Beyond the Timetable

Beyond the school day, extra-curriculars give students meaningful ways to explore interests, build friendships and practise perseverance through hands-on, student-driven experiences. Sport is a key part of this journey too – Nova Pioneer offers sporting opportunities such as soccer, basketball and netball, with some campuses offering additional options based on interest and capacity, and training happening weekly. Across fixtures and training, the goal is not only performance but growth – sport is a space where Novaneers develop teamwork, perseverance and confidence, while experiencing the joy of belonging to something bigger than themselves.

Choosing an Educational Philosophy, Not Just a School

Choosing Nova Pioneer is more than choosing a school – it is choosing a learning experience designed for the world your child is stepping into. Through our Hallmark Programmes – from Social-Emotional Learning and Leadership Development to Innovation and Leadership and Post-School Success – plus clubs, sport and co-curricular opportunities, students grow the Character, Capabilities and Connections they will need to thrive beyond the classroom. If you are looking for an education that prepares your child not only to excel in exams but to lead with purpose, we would love to welcome you into the Nova Pioneer community and help you experience the difference for yourself. We encourage you to book a campus tour at one of our schools to experience the Nova Pioneer difference firsthand and take the next step in your child’s educational journey.

How Inquiry-Based Learning at Nova Pioneer Builds Future Innovators

For first-time private school parents, the schooling landscape can feel overwhelming. Brochures filled with educational jargon and promises of excellence all start to blur. The fundamental question isn’t just what your child will learn, but how they will learn it.  At Nova Pioneer, we believe the method is the magic.

For first-time private school parents, the schooling landscape can feel overwhelming. Brochures filled with educational jargon and promises of excellence all start to blur. The fundamental question isn’t just what your child will learn, but how they will learn it.

At Nova Pioneer, we believe the method is the magic. While academic results are vital, we know that true preparation for the future comes from an educational philosophy that builds resilient, curious and collaborative individuals. This is why the Nova Pioneer teaching approach is built upon the powerful foundation of inquiry-based learning. This student-centered model is the central pillar of our promise across all Nova Pioneer schools, ensuring that from their first day, your child is an active participant in their own discovery, not a passive recipient of information.

Cambridge Curriculum, Supercharged: How We Teach for Understanding, Not Just Memorisation

One of the most common concerns for parents considering a modern educational model is whether it maintains academic rigour. The inquiry-based learning Nova Pioneer employs is not an alternative to the world-renowned Cambridge curriculum; it’s the high-performance engine that brings it to life. Instead of asking students to simply memorise scientific facts, our learners are challenged to design experiments to test those facts. Instead of reciting historical dates, they investigate the cause-and-effect relationships that shaped events. This student-centered approach transforms learning from a passive act of memorisation into an active process of investigation and construction. The result is deep, lasting comprehension and the development of critical thinking skills that far exceed what’s required to simply pass an exam. They learn to truly understand the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’.

Building Innovators Brick by Brick: Developing the ‘Three Cs’ Through Inquiry

Our ultimate goal is to develop young innovators who are ready to shape the future. Our inquiry-based methodology is the practical, daily process through which we build our core student outcomes: Character, Capabilities, and Connection. This isn’t an abstract goal; it’s a tangible result of our learning model. Character is forged when a student’s initial hypothesis in a project proves incorrect, and they must adapt, rethink, and persevere to find a solution. Capabilities, like critical thinking and problem-solving, are sharpened with every open-ended question our teachers pose. We teach students how to think, not just what to think. Connection is naturally fostered as students collaborate on projects, debate different perspectives, and learn to communicate their ideas effectively. This holistic development is embedded in everything we do, including our leadership development programmes, ensuring our students grow into well-rounded leaders, ready for a complex world.

Your Partnership in Their Education: The Parent’s Role in an Inquiry-Based Journey

Embracing a progressive education model across our campuses in Gauteng also means a slight shift in the parent’s role—from supervisor to co-discoverer. Your partnership is crucial, and we are here to guide you. Supporting inquiry-based learning at home doesn’t require a teaching degree; it simply requires fostering curiosity. Instead of asking, “What did you learn today?” try asking, “What great question did you ask today?” or “What did you get curious about?” Encourage tinkering, experimentation, and even failure as a learning opportunity. This shift celebrates the process of discovery over the simple recall of facts. You become a vital partner in nurturing a genuine, lifelong love of learning. Your encouragement of curiosity at home directly amplifies the hands-on learning your child experiences in our classrooms.

Invest in a Future-Proof Education: Take the Next Step in Your Learning Journey

Choosing a school is a significant investment in your child’s future. In a world that is constantly changing, the most valuable asset you can give them is not a head full of facts, but a mind that knows how to learn, adapt and innovate. An education built on inquiry-based learning provides precisely that. It equips students with the critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and collaborative skills that universities and future employers value. This is more than just preparation for the next exam; it’s preparation for life. It’s an investment in a future-proof skill set. We invite you to see this vibrant learning environment for yourself. We encourage you to book a campus tour at one of our schools to experience the Nova Pioneer difference firsthand and take the next step in your child’s educational journey.

A 2025 Welcome Message from Chinezi

Dear Novaneers, Welcome to 2025, and to another exciting year of learning, growth and achievement!   I hope you are as excited about the year ahead as I am!  Be it in class, on the sports field, on a stage or on a school trip – the joy of learning, the

Dear Novaneers,

Welcome to 2025, and to another exciting year of learning, growth and achievement!

I hope you are as excited about the year ahead as I am!  Be it in class, on the sports field, on a stage or on a school trip – the joy of learning, the striving to develop what lies within you, and the discovery of what you are capable of when you do – is one of life’s most rewarding opportunities.  It is a discovery that you are capable of more than you previously knew yourself to be.  It is what I call the “I can” discovery, and one of the core reasons we started Nova Pioneer a decade ago.  It energises the start of each school year.  So much possibility and discovery lies ahead!

I hope you are ready to dig into a new year of possibility!  Whether you are a returning Novaneer or you are joining Nova Pioneer for the first time; whether you are entering grade 1 or grade 12; whether you in the past have taken school in stride or found it to be really challenging; dig into this year as the new experience that it is.  Each new year is a new opportunity to try new things, build new positive habits, build new friendships and strengthen old ones, and discover more about who you can be.  Embrace our six culture principles of Joy of Learning, Always Growing, High Expectations, Greater Together, Solutions First and Servant Leadership… and commit to yourself to being 1% better every day.

As we look ahead to 2025, let us also appreciate and celebrate the legacy that Novaneer students are already building.  With 360 graduates in the Class of 2024 globally, Nova Pioneer has now graduated over 1,500 young innovators and leaders.  They have been admitted to over 100 different universities worldwide, including all of South Africa’s leading universities.  Academically, our students have achieved 90-100% annual pass rates on the rigorous Cambridge A-levels exams.  In primary school, our sixth graders consistently meet or exceed international benchmarks on Cambridge’s English, Science and Maths exams.  As they have achieved academically, they have also built stronger habits of scholarship and the joy of learning to last a lifetime.

Beyond the classroom, in 2024 our Novaneers took full advantage of our Innovation and Leadership programmes, competing in the World Robotics Olympiad, launching a first annual Nova Pioneer Shark Tank social entrepreneurship competition, presenting at science fairs and getting immersed in weekly Exploration classes.  In 2024, our students were also active on the sports field – at school; at the InterNova festivals that bring together different Nova Pioneer campuses to compete and connect;  and by competing with other schools.  With the expansion of our competitive sports programme and facilities across our senior schools – particularly for netball and soccer— our senior school student athletes now have more opportunities than ever to compete with other schools, and to learn the lessons and build the relationships that come from committed teamwork.  We look forward to continuing to grow competitive sporting opportunities for Novaneers across both primary and senior schools.

Last year I made a point of connecting with more of our alumni.  They are remarkable young women and men, pursuing paths of growth and contribution in diverse fields.  Already our alumni have started companies, are leading social initiatives, and have developed technical innovations that our schools are using to support student learning.  In 2024 we held our 3rd annual Global Alumni Summit, an event that brings together Novaneer alumni from across the continent for developmental workshops, peer network building, and guest speakers that have included inspiring African leaders and innovators such as Chimamanda Adichie, William Kamkwamba, Fred Swaniker, Ndidi Nwuneli, and Jocelyne Muhutu-Rémy.   In 2024 we even hired our first Nova Pioneer alumnus as a colleague!

As you can tell, I am very proud of our students, and of the faculty and staff who support their growth!  While I am proud of their achievements, I am most proud when I see our students live and lead our six culture principles.  Those are the values, mindsets and behaviours that make us Novaneers.  I invite you to learn about them, interrogate them, make meaning of them for yourself… and then please own, live and lead them.  While there are as many ways to be a Novaneer as there are Novaneers, what binds us as a community are our educational mission and our six culture principles.  The culture principles hold tremendous positive power for each of us individually, and for all of us collectively as a community, country, continent and world.

So welcome to 2025!  Welcome to a new year of possibility and discovery.  I look forward to bearing witness to your growth!

Warmly,

Chinezi

Scholarship Coverage:

The scholarship programme covers on average 40% of the annual tuition fees for successful candidates.

  • Scholarship percentage offer will be determined based on the academic performance demonstrated by the applicant during the admissions process (past reports, academic assessment, essay writing and interview), the Foundation’s available funds and availability of enrolment space for scholarship students at Nova Pioneer Schools.

The Foundation will terminate (or maintain the right to terminate) any scholarship for students whose Parent/Legal Guardian have not paid in full their portion of school fees at any point during each academic year.
  • The scholarship is applicable to tuition fees only and does not cover other expenses such as (but not limited to) non-refundable enrolment fee, Cambridge examination costs, uniforms, textbooks, transportation, aftercare or extracurricular activities.
  • The scholarship will still remain applicable (with the same percentage applied to that school’s fees) should the student transition from one Nova Pioneer School campus to another.
  • The scholarship is however NOT transferable to other students, nor other schools, should the recipient student transition out of Nova Pioneer Schools.
  • The scholarship programme does NOT extend to Nova Pioneer staff members.

The scholarship will be automatically renewed for subsequent years at the percentage rate offered and agreed upon provided all conditions are met, as stated above.

1.Overview

At the Nova Pioneer Foundation (the Foundation), we believe in providing affordable quality education to students who will be the future leaders and innovators of Africa. As part of our commitment to making education accessible to all, we are excited to announce our new need-based bursary programme. This programme aims to help families who aspire to join the Nova Pioneer Schools community in South Africa but face financial constraints in affording the school fees. By offering bursaries that cover between 25% to 50% of annual tuition, we aim to support eligible students from Grade 1 to Grade 10 in the 2025 and 2026 academic year at our various campuses in Johannesburg.

Our bursary programme is designed to empower deserving students who demonstrate a genuine need for financial support. We understand that education is a key driver of progress and development, and we are committed to identifying and supporting talented students who may not have the financial means to pursue their educational aspirations. Through this programme, we aim to contribute towards shaping the African century by nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators who will make a positive impact on their communities and beyond.

2. Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Spaces for the Need-based Bursary Programme are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis (provided the eligibility criteria are met). Completion of the full admissions process (including securing a need-based bursary, as well as the other admissions steps – detailed below) should be complete by 1 October 2025. The Nova Pioneer Foundation will review whether there are any available spaces and may choose to extend the programme after this date.
  • Be applying for a place in grades 1 and above in the 2025 and 2026 academic year. We currently do not have any available bursary spaces for students in grades below Grade 1.
  • An allocated space for funding support needs to be available for the specific grade/campus being applied to in 2025 or 2026 (i.e. not every grade automatically has allocated spaces  for needs-based support).
  • The applicant is required to establish their authentic financial need, and will need to provide the following accompanying documents indicating a household income below R21,000 after tax.
    • Completion of a basic household income and expense statement (template to be provided by Nova Pioneer).
    • Copy of identification documents for both biological parents i.e either a national identity card or passport with visible passport number. These are specifically for the parents listed on the child’s birth certificate as referenced in (e) below.
    • South African Revenue Service IRP5 or any other tax certification that clearly indicates their taxable income for the specified period for the last 2 years from living parent(s) or guardian(s).
    • Proof of income in the form of the most recent payslips or the latest 3 months bank statements for both self employed parents or guardians.
      • Income details of both parents/guardians in iii and iv above should be provided
    • A stamped School fees letter/account statement from the student’s current school.
    • A copy of an unabridged student’s birth certificate is also required
      • If the parent listed on the child’s birth certificate is deceased, please provide supporting evidence such as a death certificate.
      • Where the student is under the care of a guardian, the applicant is required to provide either a court order, a notarised parental consent affidavit, adoption order or foster care order to prove legal guardianship.
  • Once the bursary has been granted, the applicant will be required to complete the full application process including passing of the academic assessment, provision of required data and documentation, as well as the payment of the non-refundable enrolment fee. Failing to complete any of these steps will result in the bursary consideration being terminated.
  • Only new enrolling families are eligible; current Nova Pioneer families and staff of Nova Pioneer do not qualify.

Important note: Please note that the Nova Pioneer Foundation will not consider applications with incomplete submitted documents as outlined above.

Applicant data will be handled in compliance with applicable data protection laws and regulations. The Nova Pioneer Foundation is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of personal information provided by applicants and ensuring its use solely for the purpose of assessing the bursary application.

The Nova Pioneer Foundation retains the right to verify the accuracy and authenticity of information provided by applicants and their families. This verification process may include conducting background checks and requesting additional documentation or evidence to substantiate financial need. Applicants are obligated to fully cooperate with The Nova Pioneer Foundation during this verification process and fully consent to the foundation to verify their income through a credit reference bureau.

The final decision will be at the sole discretion of the Nova Foundation and the Nova Foundation reserves the right to not enter into discussion/negotiations in this regard. The decision of the Nova Pioneer Foundation will be final.

3. Bursary Coverage

The bursary programme covers between 25% to 50% of the annual tuition fees for successful candidates.

  1. Bursary percentage offer will be determined based on the level of financial need demonstrated by the applicant, the Foundation’s available funds and availability of enrolment space – for bursary students at Nova Pioneer Schools.
  2. The bursary will be applicable for the entire period that the student remains enrolled and in good standing at Nova Pioneer Schools. The family remains liable for the remaining percentage of fees that is not covered by the Foundation’s bursary and should always pay their fees in accordance with the Nova Pioneer School fees policy. The Foundation will terminate (or maintain the right to terminate) any bursary for students who have not paid in full their portion of school fees by the end of each academic year.
  3. The bursary is applicable to tuition fees only and does not cover other expenses such as non-refundable enrolment fee, uniforms, textbooks, transportation, aftercare or extracurricular activities.
  4. The bursary will still remain applicable should the student transition from one Nova Pioneer School campus to another at the same percentage of bursary support despite different chargeable school fees.
  5. The bursary is however NOT transferable to other students, nor other schools, should the recipient student transition out of Nova Pioneer Schools.
  6. The bursary cannot be applied to fee arrears should/after the should leave/s.
  7. The bursary is NOT applicable to Nova Pioneer Schools and Nova Pioneer Foundation staff members.

  3. The recipient’s family’s financial circumstances change significantly, and they no longer demonstrate a genuine financial need.

12. Programme Adjustments and Modification:

Such adjustments will be implemented in a fair and transparent manner and notice of such modifications will be communicated to bursary recipients and posted on The Nova Pioneer Foundation’s official communication channels. Reasonable notice will be given to the bursary recipients for any adjustments or termination of the programme.

13. Annual Financial Audit:

The Nova Pioneer Foundation reserves the right to conduct an annual audit of the financial status of the guardians or families of bursary recipients to verify their continued eligibility for the bursary. The purpose of this audit is to ensure that the bursary is allocated to those who genuinely require financial assistance. Guardians or families selected for audit will be notified in advance and required to provide relevant financial documentation for review. Failure to cooperate or provide requested documentation may result in the termination of the bursary.

14. Cooperation with Audits and Reviews:

Bursary recipients and their families agree to fully cooperate with any audits, reviews, or investigations conducted by Nova Pioneer or the Nova Pioneer Foundation.
