At Nova Pioneer Ormonde Primary, fostering creativity and self-expression is at the heart of our educational approach. Recently, our campus had the pleasure of participating in the SACEE Art Competition, an exciting event for Grades 1-7, where young Novaneers were invited to showcase their unique artistic talents. Organized by Mondeor Primary School, this competition was a platform for students to display their imagination, critical thinking, and creative flair.

The SACEE Art Competition was a thrilling opportunity for our students to put their skills to the test. Under the supervision of dedicated teachers, learners from each grade worked independently, demonstrating impressive focus and commitment. With great enthusiasm and creativity, all grades completed their artwork on time, and the top eight pieces from our school were selected to proceed to the finals. These outstanding pieces joined others from participating schools, creating a vibrant exhibition held at The Glen Mall from Tuesday, October 29th, to Monday, November 4th.

The gallery of artworks was a feast for the eyes, with pieces ranging from colourful paintings to intricate drawings. Each piece offered a unique glimpse into the young artists’ creativity and skill, making the judging process both challenging and rewarding.

Our talented students who made it through to the exhibition were invited, along with their families, to an awards ceremony on November 1st at The Glen Mall. The turnout was fantastic, with students and their loved ones coming together to celebrate this memorable event and recognize the efforts of all the participants.

Celebrating the Winners

We are incredibly proud of our students whose creativity shone brightly in this competition. A heartfelt congratulations goes to our winners:

– Grade 2: Nuha Moolla – Silver Runner-up, Kayden Lee Dunn – Silver Runner-up, Tshimologo Lebuse – Gold

– Grade 4: Adam Lawrence – Silver Runner-up, Chantel Mhlongo – Silver Runner-up, Kamogelo Dikobe – Gold

– Grade 5: Priyal Bhowandas – Gold

– Grade 7: Matthew Naidoo – Gold

Their artwork displayed remarkable talent and imagination, earning them a well-deserved place in this esteemed exhibition.

Here’s what some of the young artists had to say about their experience:

– Nuha Moolla shared her excitement, saying, “On Thursday night, I was so excited. When Friday came, I wanted the day to speed up a bit. At half past 4, I got to the car and we left. My aunt, cousin, and grandmother came as well. By the time we got to the venue, there was a crowd of people already. I waited for announcements to start. When they called out my name, I was excited. I read the certificate as fast as I could. I got a silver award, which means runner-up.”

– Priyal Bhowandas reflected, “My experience at The Glen Mall was amazing. I got nervous when I got there, searching for my art piece. My family was proud and took pictures everywhere. I enjoyed it; in other words, it went well.”

The SACEE Art Competition was a true celebration of artistic talent, encouraging our students to embrace their creativity and share it with the community. We are incredibly proud of each participant and deeply grateful for the support from our teachers and parents. Events like these underscore Nova Pioneer Ormonde’s commitment to nurturing the whole child, inspiring future artists, and cultivating creativity in every learner.

Nova Pioneer’s Enhanced Sibling Discount Policy for 2025

At Nova Pioneer, we understand that families who have multiple children in school face unique financial pressures. Education is a valuable investment, and we are committed to supporting families who choose to have their children grow, learn, and thrive together within our school community. Having siblings in the same school

At Nova Pioneer, we understand that families who have multiple children in school face unique financial pressures. Education is a valuable investment, and we are committed to supporting families who choose to have their children grow, learn, and thrive together within our school community. Having siblings in the same school can strengthen family bonds, create shared memories, and offer logistical convenience for parents. To ease some of the financial demand on these families, we have reviewed and enhanced our sibling discount policy, which will take effect in 2025.

Updated Sibling Discount Policy for 2025

Recognising the increased financial strain on families with three or more children, our updated sibling discount policy aims to provide meaningful support where it is needed most. Here’s how it works:

First Child: Tuition is charged at the standard rate, with no discount (current policy).

Second Child: A 5% discount on tuition is provided (current policy).

Third Child: The tuition discount has been increased from 10% to 20%.

Fourth Child: The tuition discount has been increased from 10% to 25%.

Fifth Child and Above: A 30% discount on tuition is now available (up from 10%).

These adjustments are designed to significantly reduce financial strain on families with multiple children in school, especially those with three or more children. By increasing the discounts at these levels, we are offering greater relief to larger families, enabling them to focus on what matters most –  their children’s education and development.

Why This Matters

At Nova Pioneer, our approach to education emphasises community, collaboration, and family engagement. We deeply value the sense of unity that siblings can experience when they attend the same school, benefiting from shared values, learning experiences, and milestones. We’re also aware of the practical advantages this provides to parents, who can have all their children in one school environment that prioritises their growth and future success.

Supporting Our Nova Pioneer Families

With this new policy, we aim to make our education more accessible and affirm our commitment to our Nova Pioneer families. We hope this initiative supports your family in continuing a Nova Pioneer journey that builds on both academic and personal growth for all siblings.

Thank you for choosing Nova Pioneer as a partner in your children’s education. We look forward to welcoming your family to another year of innovation, leadership, and learning together.

If you have questions about this policy or need additional details, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly admissions team – email them at admissions.sa@novapioneer.com

Introducing NP Flex: A New Era of Cambridge Learning and Support at Nova Pioneer

Nova Pioneer is thrilled to announce the launch of our innovative NP Flex programme in January 2025, designed to provide flexible and robust support to Cambridge International private candidates in the Gauteng region. The NP Flex initiative is the culmination of two major influences over the last four years: the impact of Covid-19 on conventional schooling and our school’s growing role as a Cambridge International examinations centre. This programme is a response to evolving student needs and Nova Pioneer’s commitment to fostering accessible, high-quality academic support.

The Journey to Nova Flex

The Covid-19 pandemic saw a significant shift in the educational landscape, with many students moving away from traditional schooling into homeschooling and online tutoring. As more students entered this alternative learning sphere, a demand arose for an accredited Cambridge examination centre in the south of Johannesburg. Nova Pioneer, as a registered, accredited Cambridge school, saw an opportunity to serve this unique student base by providing access to our exam centre. Over the last four years, we’ve built a loyal client base of private candidates who rely on our facilities for their crucial Cambridge exams.

However, the journey was not without challenges. We found that many private candidates, especially in Mathematics and the sciences, struggled with the rigorous demands of the Cambridge curriculum. Recognising this gap, we informally extended our services in 2024 to offer additional support sessions to private candidates. The enthusiastic response demonstrated a clear need for a structured support system, and by August 2024, Nova Pioneer CEO, Chinezi Chijioke, decided to formalise these support services into what is now the NP Flex programme.

What is NP Flex?

NP Flex launches in January 2025 with two flexible pathways designed to support diverse learning needs:

  1. NP Flex 1: The Enriched Examination Centre

This option is designed for students who study independently but need a reliable Cambridge exam centre with an added range of support services. In NP Flex 1, students retain a high degree of independence in their learning, but they also have access to valuable, optional resources to enhance their exam preparation. From subject-specific advisory services to focused exam prep sessions, students can customise their experience by selecting from an array of support services tailored to their needs. Pricing is set on a per-service basis, allowing students to pick and pay only for what they need.

  1. NP Flex 2: The Holistic Hybrid Programme

NP Flex 2 is a full-service hybrid option, providing online students the benefits of campus resources and a Support Coach. This holistic approach offers students flexible access to Nova Pioneer’s Ormonde campus, where they can engage in a variety of school-based opportunities. This includes tutoring sessions, practical lab experiences, subject-focused boot camps, and extracurricular activities like sports and clubs. NP Flex 2 is designed for those who seek a balance between independence and support, combining the best aspects of online learning with the enrichment opportunities of a physical campus.

Why Choose NP Flex?

NP Flex is built on four core principles — Flexibility, Support, Access and Community — to ensure students can thrive in their Cambridge journey. For those studying independently, it offers the structure they need without sacrificing autonomy. For students wanting a deeper connection to a learning community, it offers access to Nova Pioneer’s facilities, staff, and peer networks.

Through NP Flex, Nova Pioneer aims to meet the evolving needs of Cambridge private candidates in the Gauteng area. We believe that students should have access to the support they need to excel academically while also enjoying the benefits of a holistic school environment. As we launch NP Flex in January 2025, we look forward to helping each student achieve their highest potential in an environment that prioritises both flexibility, academic rigour and growth.

October 11th marks the International Day of the Girl Child, a global observance aimed at empowering girls and addressing the unique challenges they face. This day emphasises the importance of equipping girls with the tools, opportunities, and education needed to thrive, particularly in a world that is increasingly driven by technology. However, despite the potential that digital tools offer, a significant digital divide continues to prevent many girls from fully accessing and utilising these technologies.

In response to this challenge, the United Nations Youth Theme Group, in collaboration with various partners, hosted the Digital Youth Tech Expo. This event was specially designed to empower girls by providing them with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed in the digital age. The expo celebrated young girls’ achievements in technology and aimed to inspire others to explore and innovate in this dynamic space.

At Nova Pioneer Midrand Senior School (NPM S), our Computer Science teacher, Miss Anathi Bili, took the initiative to ensure that our students were part of this meaningful event. She organised a group of girls to attend the expo, where they engaged in various tech-related activities and discussions. The event, which was streamed live on Facebook, saw two of our students win tablets sponsored by MTN by participating in a Q&A session.

One of the winners, Sri Sahasri, a Grade 8 student at NPM S, shared her excitement about the event: “I felt very informed and inspired. I learnt about how women are the future in the tech space and a lot about women empowerment.”

The event not only provided a platform for learning but also fostered a sense of empowerment and encouragement for the girls. Miss Bili, reflecting on the experience, said: “It was an eye-opening experience for our learners. Such events help us foster encouragement and value in our students. Seeing them fully engaged, and two of them winning tablets, made me feel proud about the future of the girl child in the digital world.”

Another winner, Atanga, a Grade 9 student, shared her thoughts on the expo: “What I took away from the whole event was that girls are more than capable of entering the tech industry and conquering space.”

At Nova Pioneer, we continually strive to provide our students with opportunities that align with their future aspirations. Exposing our students to relatable industries such as technology helps them visualise their future careers and builds confidence in their ability to shape the world. This commitment directly supports our mission of developing generations of innovators and leaders who will shape the African Century.

As we celebrate the achievements of our students, we remain dedicated to inspiring and empowering more girls to bridge the digital divide and confidently take their place in the tech world. The future is bright, and the future is female!

Robotics Team Brings Home the Silver for Nova Pioneer Ormonde Senior

We are proud to announce that Nova Pioneer Ormonde Senior’s incredible robotics team qualified for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Nationals and brought home a prestigious Silver Certificate! We are proud to announce that Nova Pioneer Ormonde Senior’s incredible robotics team qualified for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Nationals and brought home a prestigious Silver Certificate! This achievement highlights our students’ passion for innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving, setting a powerful example of what can be accomplished with dedication and collaboration.

A Remarkable Opportunity

For our students, competing in the WRO was a dream come true. The journey to the Nationals was not only a test of their technical skills but also a deeply rewarding experience that allowed them to explore their creativity and critical thinking abilities. Bokamoso Hlapane, one of the key members of the team, reflected on what this opportunity meant:

“It has been such a great honour to be part of the robotics competitions. It was an opportunity that not many had, so I am very grateful for the opportunity we had, and I am glad that we didn’t let it go to waste. I am also grateful for making our school proud. I am proud of the team.”

Bokamoso’s gratitude speaks to the heart of what this competition represents—a chance for students to step out of the classroom and take on real-world challenges with innovation and determination.

Teamwork and Determination

The Nationals brought together the best robotics teams from around the country, all eager to compete at the highest level. It wasn’t an easy task, but Unathi Jiyane, another standout team member, shared how their team’s strong sense of collaboration and resilience helped them succeed:

“We faced tough competition, but through teamwork and determination, we pulled through.”

The competition was fierce, with teams tackling new challenges on an unfamiliar game mat, pushing everyone to think on their feet. The dynamic nature of the Nationals required students to strategize quickly, adapt to changes, and come up with the best possible solutions under pressure.

A Test of Creativity and Problem-Solving

At its core, the WRO is designed to sharpen creativity and problem-solving skills—two essential qualities for the innovators of tomorrow. Competing at the Nationals introduced the Nova Pioneer team to a new game mat, meaning they had to adapt their strategies and approach the challenge with fresh ideas. Reflecting on this aspect of the competition, Zamantima Thela said:

“The national final had the best of the best teams competing from around the country. All the teams worked really hard. The WRO competitions encourage young people to sharpen their creativity and problem-solving skills. That’s the big idea. Unlike the provincial level where we knew where elements would be, the national finals presented the teams with a new game mat. The teams had to work strategically to get as many points as possible. It was interesting seeing the different approaches that the teams took to solve the problem.”

The students’ ability to adapt and innovate under these circumstances was key to their success. Seeing the different ways in which teams approached the same problem added an extra layer of learning and growth for everyone involved.

Inspiration and Team Spirit

For their coach, teacher and mentor, Zamantima Thela, it was a proud moment to watch the team thrive under pressure and enjoy the competition. The energy, teamwork, and sheer enjoyment they brought to the national finals were evident:

“My team, Unathi and Bokamoso, worked very well as a team. I could see how much fun they were having in the national finals. They were so inspired by their own work. Nova Pioneer definitely will be back next year. We are looking forward to seeing how well we do in the other competitions.”

Zamantima’s excitement for the future reflects the enthusiasm that the entire Nova Pioneer community feels about the next steps for our robotics team.

Looking to the Future

This year’s success is just the beginning for Nova Pioneer Ormonde Senior. Our students have shown that they are capable of competing with the best, and they’ve gained valuable experience that will carry them into future competitions and beyond. With their creativity, determination, and passion for robotics, we’re confident that they will continue to push boundaries and innovate.

We couldn’t be prouder of the Nova Pioneer Ormonde Senior Robotics Team for bringing home the Silver Certificate at the WRO Nationals. Their achievement is a reflection of the Nova Pioneer spirit—one of continuous learning, problem-solving, and collaboration.

As we look ahead to next year’s competitions, we are excited to see how far our students will go. Nova Pioneer is committed to fostering the skills and talents of our learners, and we know that with their drive and passion, the future is incredibly bright.

Congratulations once again to Bokamoso, Unathi, and the entire team! You have made your school proud and set the stage for even greater success. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next!

With a deep passion for education and an impressive journey of leadership, Prathna brings a wealth of experience and dedication to fostering student success. We take a moment to get to know her inspiring journey.

A Passion for Teaching from the Start

Prathna’s story begins in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, where she grew up in a family of four, including her younger brother. From a young age, her dream was clear—to become a teacher. This passion never wavered throughout her schooling years, and after matriculating, she pursued her BA in Psychology, followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.

Her teaching career began in Durban, where she had the opportunity to develop and refine her skills at a school that provided a rich learning environment. After gaining experience, she applied for teaching positions in both Durban and Johannesburg, eventually landing a role at a Johannesburg-based organisation. During her four years there, Prathna’s talent for leadership became evident, and in 2019, she was promoted to Assistant Principal.

Joining the Nova Pioneer Family

In 2020, Prathna’s leadership journey took a new turn when she joined Nova Pioneer North Riding as the Associate Dean of Instruction. Reflecting on her time at Nova Pioneer, she shares how the school’s focus on coaching, development, and creating meaningful challenges helped her grow at an accelerated pace.

“In my time at Nova Pioneer, I was learning and growing at an accelerated rate due to the coaching, development, and challenging situations I faced,” says Prathna.

Her dedication and commitment to fostering a positive and dynamic learning environment quickly led to her promotion in 2023 to Dean of Instruction.

A New Chapter as Head of School

This year, Prathna’s journey reached an exciting milestone. After an extensive interview process among many strong candidates, she was selected to become the Head of School at Nova Pioneer North Riding in September 2024. Prathna’s vision for the school is one rooted in creating opportunities for growth, nurturing a culture of excellence, and empowering students to become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.

We are incredibly proud to have Prathna Ramchunder at the helm of Nova Pioneer North Riding and are confident that under her leadership, our students and community will continue to thrive.

Let’s all welcome Prathna as she leads us into this exciting new chapter!

Nova Pioneer Boksburg is thrilled to announce the appointment of our new school leader, whose dedication to education spans over three decades. With a remarkable career marked by academic excellence, a love for teaching, and a strong commitment to student success, our new leader Dr Robyn Thompson is set to guide Nova Pioneer Boksburg into an exciting new chapter.

She has dedicated her life to fostering a love for learning and ensuring academic excellence. Her journey in education began at the Johannesburg College of Education, now the University of Witwatersrand School of Education, where she graduated in 1993. Since then, she has continually sought to deepen her understanding of education, completing a Bachelor of Education with Honours, followed by a Master’s in Education.

In March 2020, she achieved a significant milestone by earning a PhD from the University of Cape Town’s School of Education. Her doctoral research, titled “Teaching Intra-Active Comprehension with Picturebooks in a Grade Three South African Classroom”, explores the dynamic relationships between the classroom environment, time practices, and students’ bodily actions in shaping literacy teaching and learning. This research underscores her innovative approach to education, rooted in understanding the holistic ways children interact with their learning environment.

Throughout her extensive career, she has worked in both private and public schools, gaining invaluable experience across a wide range of educational settings. From teaching in the Foundation Phase to working with higher grade levels, she has developed a deep understanding of the diverse developmental stages and needs of students. This wide-ranging experience enriches her approach to supporting student growth at every level.

In 2020, she joined Nova Pioneer as the Associate Dean of Instruction at the Boksburg campus. In this role, she has made a profound impact on the lives of students and worked closely with educators to uphold the highest standards of teaching and learning. Her primary goal has always been to create a nurturing environment where every student feels a sense of belonging and experiences the joy of learning.

“I believe that when students feel valued and supported, they are more likely to engage deeply with their studies and to achieve their full potential,” shared Thompson. “This commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment is at the heart of her leadership philosophy.”

Her dedication extends beyond the classroom, as she is deeply committed to partnering with parents, teachers, and the broader community. She believes in setting high expectations not only for students’ academic achievements but also for their personal growth and development. By cultivating a culture of excellence and mutual respect, her aim is to empower students to become confident, capable, and compassionate individuals who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world.

One quote that resonates deeply with her is by Albert Einstein: “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” This philosophy reflects her belief that education should not only impart knowledge but also inspire creativity and a lifelong love for learning.

She is driven by a deep care for our students and a strong commitment to their success. She is eager to continue fostering an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. By working together with parents, teachers, and the community, we are confident that Nova Pioneer Boksburg will continue to provide students with the tools they need to achieve their dreams and become future leaders.

We are incredibly excited to welcome such an accomplished and passionate leader. With her extensive experience, deep love for education, and unwavering commitment to student success, Nova Pioneer Boksburg is set to flourish under her leadership.

Let’s all give a warm welcome to Dr Robyn Thompson as we look forward to a bright future filled with growth, learning, and success!
